Name change from Beaner's Coffee

Due to concerns that the term "beaner" is disparaging toward Latinos, it was announced on Sep 15, 2007, that Beaner's Coffee would be changing its name to Biggby Coffee effective immediately. The decision caused a small stir in the Lansing area and among MSU students. The change will be completed by Jan. 31st, 2008. Biggby chief executive and co-founder Bob Fish says the East Lansing-based company never intended to have a name that could be perceived as derogatory.
"Beaner's Coffee is the largest 100 percent operator-owned retail coffee franchise in the U.S. and is among the fastest-growing franchises in the nation. Entrepreneur Magazine included Beaner's among its 2007 list of top franchise opportunities. To expand into new markets, we've heard more and more comments about our name, to the point that we had to take a hard look at changing it,' said Fish. 'We ultimately felt we would be condoning the use of a disparaging term if we chose to do nothing.'"
